Paper faces

A volume with novels whose main theme is the fear. They were written during the years of dictatorship in Greece and awakened in me another old fear, that of the Occupation when I was a child. Faces are lost in unknown places – because they are actually lost inside.

And now my novel Paper Faces is wearing me down. I have to protest the Junta’s irrational condition. From the day I returned to the office, everyone still looks at me suspiciously. They were informed that in Paris I participated in the demonstrations organized by Jacques Lacarrière for Greece. But I want to write about the absurdity I live in. It doesn’t let me sleep at night. My book’s characters are lost in places they don’t know. My “paper” faces. And I’m lost with them too. I feel like I am made out of paper too.
From my diaries, December 1968
